Szarvas – Water Theater

Szarvas is located in the Great Hungarian Plain upon the Körös River, 170 km (106 mi) southeast from Budapest. Highways 44 and 443, and the Mezőtúr-Orosháza-Mezőhegyes railway line also cross the town.[1] The geographic centre of Hungary was near Szarvas before the Treaty of Trianon; a memorial in a windmill shape now marks that location in a park on a bank of the Körös River across from the Arboretum.

Water Theater is an open-air theatre by the River Körös in the town of Szarvas. This unique architectural wonder was set up in the heart of Central Europe, at the gate of Békés County in the year of 2011.

Open air ethnographic museums were established at the end of the 19th century owing to various factors. On the one hand, in accordance with the scientific progress branches of museology continually developed and differentiated. A demand for creating an ethnographic museum which is suitable to demonstrate folk life in a most complex way, furnishings and farming equipment included arose. On the other hand, the capitalist economy reaching its developed stage since the second half of the 19th century resulted in an intensive urbanisation and modernisation from the north-west to the east of Europe, as a consequence of which the existing pieces of peasant architecture began sinking into decay at an alarming speed. Preservation of monuments of folk architecture became imperative. For accomplishing this dual task “skanzens” have proved to be exceptionally appropriate.

Visegrád

Visegrád – Citadel

Citadel

The upper fortification system built by Béla IV, the Citadel, was constructed in the 1250s. The Holy Crown was housed in the old castle tower from 1323 until the Ottoman subjection. The castle, which was the primary location of the 1335 Congress of Visegrád, had been expanded and embellished in the times of Sigismund of Luxemburg and Matthias Corvinus. By the end of the Ottoman subjection, the stronghold, shot to ruin in multiple sieges, had lost its military significance. Its restoration is in progress to this day.

Pécs

The Zsolnay Quarter might just be the most beautiful gem of Pécs. One of the most important developments that took place as part of the European Capital of Culture programme was the renovation of the listed Zsolnay factory buildings, which had become dilapidated and for the most part unused.
Various cultural and educational organisations have been relocated here, creating an active Cultural Quarter and recreational area. The Zsolnay Quarter receives several hundreds of thousands of visitors over an almost five-hectare area supplied with an informative visitors’ centre, a parking lot, academic community spaces and a vibrating cultural life.
The building of the Art Faculty of Pécs and its library, located in an old kiln, are both spectacular pieces of architecture. The Street of Artisans’ Shops includes a handicrafts shop, a live candy manufacture, a chocholate store, a café and a restaurant.
